Types of Sunrooms and Patio Rooms
Screened Rooms/Porches
A screened room or porch is simply one that has had screens installed along its perimeter. It basically is there to protect you from insects and offers little protection otherwise. It doesn’t extend the use of a porch into colder months, since it has no way of warming.
Full Glass Rooms vs. Partial Glass
The defining characteristic of a sun room is the amount of sun it lets in and the position of the light and heat entering. The easiest way to manipulate a sunroom is with the placement and number of windows. Some sunrooms have walls that are almost 100% glass, while some have windows that only come down to your knees. Some people might only want a certain portion of the walls composed of large windows, and some elect to install skylights. There are many options, and sunrooms are completely customizable.
Three and Four Season Sunrooms
The time of year you use your sunroom can also determine its nature. For example, the goal of a sunroom for many is to use sunlight and glass for warmth during colder months. However, in many areas the coldest times of year are too cold even for a sunroom. For those people who choose to only use a sunroom for summer, autumn, and spring, a three season sunroom is desirable. However, with heating in the form of radiators, forced air, or even a fireplace or woodstove, the room can be used all year round.
