Single Hung/Double Hung
When discussing windows, the sash refers to the framing around the glass. Because there is usually a lower and upper frame, there are usually two sashes. When only the bottom slash slides upward, the window is called a single hung unit. Amongst double hung units, both sashes slide vertically. A double hung unit gives more ventilation options
Casement
Casement windows have hinges on one side. They swing outward to open. Air leakage is greatly decreased amongst casement windows, the sash and frame press together to close the window. Casements also give good ventilation in the warmer seasons, since the outward swinging glass and sash intercept breezes and can redirect them into the house.
Awning
Awning windows open outward and are hinged at the top. They also have low leakage rates and act much like casement windows.
Bay Window
Three or more windows make up a bay window. Jutting out from a wall, the outside windows (flanker units) are tilted away from the building at up to 90 degrees. The center panel lies parallel to the building and can be a single pane or more than one. All can open or be stationary.
Bow Window
A bow window is a group of at least four (usually five) windows that abut one another. They are installed on a radius from the wall of the building they protrude from.
Fixed Frame
A fixed frame window is simply one that does not open. It can have any number of shapes.
Skylight
Whenever a window is installed on a roof/ceiling and takes the same slope of that roof/ceiling, it is considered a skylight. Depending on the direction the skylight faces, it will take in heat differently. Because the United States is in the northern hemisphere, during the summer months 5 times the heat emitted by a normal window facing north will be emitted by a north-facing skylight. The opposite is true in the winter; it is north facing skylights that let in more light and heat.
Slider
A slider is a window that slides open horizontally. It is very much like a tilted single sash window; double sash sliders are rare.
