Aluminum
While they might be desirable for custom designed windows, heat loss is much greater through aluminum windows. Condensation via aluminum windows can also be a problem. You can install thermal breaks, which are plastic strips that you can put between the inside and outside of the frame and sash for insulation.
Wood
Wood is a very good insulator and resists extremes in temperature. They also block condensation very well. However, they require a good deal of care. They must be repainted often and can warp if not given proper maintenance or sheerly through age.
Vinyl
PVC has a lot of advantages. Colors and shapes are easily made to order, and damage (though they are durable) is largely unnoticeable. Vinyl also is an excellent insulator and requires little care other than cleaning.
Fiberglass
Not widely available yet, fiberglass has only recently come onto the replacement window market. They are they best insulators available and do not shrink, corrode, or rot. Like vinyl they can be made into a variety of colors and shapes and when hollow are very light weight.
