Gutter Protection
Gutters, being on the exterior of your home, are constantly assaulted by the elements. Rain, sleet, snow, hail, birds, insects and mold: all these things can do damage to gutters that might have been very costly for you. Leaves are also a threat, if you leave in an area with a lot of foliage. One of the most time consuming and disgusting jobs can be cleaning your gutters, which, depending on the area you live in can require 5-6 cleanings in the falls and 3-4 in the spring just to run optimally.
Gutter protection systems fall into 3 basic categories:
- Single Vane: the Gutter Helmet is an example of this system.
- Single Vane type with sieve openings in built-in trough.
- Louvered system.
Anything else falls into the category of a screening system and is not considered a protector. When the openings of a gutter accessory is horizontal and still allows leaves and debris to clog it, it is not considered gutter protection.
Leaf Guards
Leaf guards basically prevent leaves from getting into your gutter. Cleaning the gutters is a very undesirable job and time consuming. Keeping up with the amount of leaves in your gutter forces you to expend a lot of energy, and if you fall behind, it can me damage to your home in the form of sagging gutters, a flooded or wet basement, and a leaky or cracked foundation. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent leaves from giving you too many problems.
K-Guard Leaf Free Gutter System
The K-Guard Leaf Free System, available only on K-Shaped systems, is the most popular and most durable protection from leaves. Unobtrusive, since it can be installed over most gutters and doesn’t require the reinstallation of shingles and siding, it is also an attractive supplement to your gutter system.
PermaFlow
PermaFlow is the most expensive but perhaps most effective form of Leaf Guard. At the high end of the high end of leaf prevention models, it is an integrated system that requires some removal of shingles. However, once it is in place it functions magnificently and requires little to no maintenance.
Lock On
Lock On is favored by contractors and is the most unnoticeable form of gutter protection. It simply locks over the gutter and is composed of a mesh that captures leaves and debris.
Drop In
A Drop In system is much like a Lock On system in that it is composed of a wire mesh that captures leaves and debris. However, it isn’t as firmly attached and can be installed by a homeowner.
Things to Be Aware of:
There are some points you always want to consider when installing a gutter or accessory:
- How does the gutter attach to your home? Avoid doing major renovations to install a gutter simply to cause more problems such as leaks.
- How does the water get into the gutter? Be familiar with the inner workings of your new system.
- Realize that gutters can make a very appealing home to many animals, especially birds.
- Know enough about your gutter protection system so that if it fails, you can disable it and at least use your gutters by themselves while your gutter guard is repaired.
